Cosumnes River College Firefighter Internship Program

Overview

The Firefighter Internship Program and Fire Academy is a two-year internship designed for students who want to earn their Firefighter 1 and Firefighter 2 certifications while gaining hands-on experience. This program is a partnership between Cosumnes River College’s (CRC) Work Experience Education and Internship Program and the Cosumnes Community Services District (CSD) Fire Department. Since 1987, CRC and Cosumnes CSD have worked together to provide Fire Technology students with practical, real-world training.

Program Structure

📅 First Semester:

Enroll in FT 210 (Firefighter 1 Academy) – 30 hours per week (Friday nights, Saturday & Sunday).

Learn personal protective equipment (PPE), vehicle extrication, hazardous materials operations, wildland firefighting, and more.

Prepare for the California State and National Firefighter 1 Capstone test (fees apply).

📅 Second Semester & Beyond:

Begin on-the-job training at a fire station.

Enroll in FT 211 (Firefighter 2 Academy) – meets every Saturday.

Continue developing technical and leadership skills.

Note: Students are responsible for the cost of PPE, uniforms, and certification fees.

 

Who Can Apply?

🚒 Minimum Qualifications:
✔ Completion of Fire Technology 300 (FT 300) - Fire Protection Organization (3 units) with a ‘C’ or better
✔ Completion of FEMA Independent Study Courses (IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, IS-800) (free, self-paced online) – links available under Minimum Qualifications when you click apply
California EMT Certification or California Paramedic License (Paramedics must be Sacramento County ALS accredited)
Current CPR for Healthcare Providers card (American Heart Association or equivalent)
High school diploma or GED
Valid California driver’s license
At least 18 years old
Minimum 2.5 GPA
Pass a Physical Abilities Test & Health Examination
Pass DOJ & FBI background checks and a drug screening
Demonstrate teamwork experience (work, sports, or volunteer)
Enroll in FT 498 Work Experience each semester
Complete an Interview Workshop before your interview
